A Ricardo Villalobos-collaborator and one of the main Perlon artists, leading pioneer of electronic music Thomas Melchior’s musical roots date back to his English grammar school days where he trained as a composer, singer and keyboardist. Soon after he owned a label named Earworm and performed at the local warehouses, clubs and pubs, later evolving to performing as Ohm, where he experimented with and fused electronic and funkadelic sounds with soul and jazz. Thomas’ unique melding of sounds caught the attention of Africa Bambaata, Acid Jazz and Talking Loud’s Gilles Peterson. His project with Baby Ford and Zip under Soul Capsule has brought us timeless classics like Overcome and Lady Science.

Thomas displays his deep knowledge of music and vast record collection with his signature all-vinyl DJ sets and brings the whole studio to the club with his mesmerizing live sets. His unique sound has reached cult status as is regularly supported by producers/DJs like Daniel Bell, Luke Solomon, Ricardo Villalobos, Akufen, Richie Hawtin, and many more. He is joined by another DJ/producer from NYC who also plays live as well as DJ’ing.

VAVAV, a long-time New York resident, one-third of N/UM live trio is originally from Copenhagen and has had a long and varied trajectory in music. His experience as an arranger and composer, writing scores for both small and large ensembles in the modern jazz realm, utilizing classical orchestration techniques with rich harmonic structure makes for an uncommon musical progression and brings about a character in his productions that is at once both contextually integrated and highly recognizable. Thomas Melchior’s remix of VAVAV’s “The Ideology, Stance and Practice of Revolution” featuring Amiri Baraka is set to be released in July 2021.

Starting up the night is DC’s hometown hero and one half of Rush Plus, Jus Nowhere. Justin aka Jus Nowhere has released many records that have gained the support of international talents like Thomas Melchior, Brawther, and Roger Gerressen to name a few.

In the Green Room local talents Chris Nitti and Rich Thomas bring us their Hot Diggity Dog flavor from open to close. At Flash Bar we have DC favorites Shervin, Isa and Rochelle.

THOMAS MELCHIOR:

Born in Germany Thomas Melchior partly was raised in the USA, Spain and finally England. There in 1982 Thomas finished his high school years at the Waldorf school in Sussex, where he also started his musical career as composer /singer and keyboarder before moving to London where he soon formed his first Jazzfunk five-piece band (Blipvert Bigtop). Releasing records on his own Label (Earworm) they performed in London warehouses, clubs and pubs.

After getting married and becoming a Father, Thomas’s next project Ohm experimented with and fused electronic and funkadelic sounds with Soul and Jazz. Catching the attention of the likes of Africa Bambaata, Acid Jazz and Talking Loud’s Gilles Peterson. Ohm’s “Heady Volt Experience EP” had a strong influence on the later emerging trip hop scene (James Lavelle, Mo Wax often mentioning it as a blueprint). But times were a changing and Melchior moved on to pioneer and explore other moods and grooves.

VAVAV:

DJ/Producer VAVAV is analog based with a taste for melodic rhythms and bass lines; a warm, stripped down sound. With careful attention to arrangement and intricate composition, his music ranges from mood draped, rhythmic soundscapes to playful club tracks.
VAVAV is the alias of musician, DJ, composer and arranger Emil Bovbjerg. A long-time New York resident originally from Copenhagen, Denmark, Bovbjerg has had a long and varied trajectory in music. His experience as an arranger and composer, writing scores for both small and large ensembles in the modern jazz realm, utilizing classical orchestration techniques with rich harmonic structure makes for an uncommon musical progression and brings about a character in his productions that is at once both contextually integrated and highly recognizable. As a DJ as well as a producer VAVAV is analog powered, deep and soulful with a taste for melodic rhythms and bass lines. A warm, stripped down sound, simple and clear of cosmetic effect. His music is as much influenced by Gil Evans and Oliver Nelson as Jeff Mills  and ranges from mood draped, rhythmic soundscapes to playful club tracks.

Emil Bovbjerg is a founding member of live electronic trio N/UM performing live free improvisation at clubs, festivals and warehouse parties around the world.
