Join us for a special night featuring Detroit legends at an offsite warehouse event.

Inspirational Grammy Nominee and electronic music icon Carl Craig makes his anticipated return to DC. He is one of the initiators and founders of the world renowned Movement Music Festival in Detroit, and has even launched his own non-profit organization encouraging music education for children called the “Carl Craig Foundation.” In August of this year, his label, Planet E, was chosen as the label of the month on Beatport. The Detroit native can easily be pinned as one of the most influential artists in both the US and electronic music as a whole. After rocking major dancefloors at Circoloco, Loveland, Sonar, BPM, Junction 2, CRSSD, and Movement, Carl Craig brings Detroit Love to DC.  

Next up on this legendary lineup we have Women on Wax label boss, DJ Minx. Mixmag named her as part of the “20 Women Who Shaped the History of Dance Music,” while TimeOut included her as one of the “Best house music DJs of all time.” She isn’t just a part of massive Detroit lineups, but frequents the most important venues and festivals around the world. Her most recent release is a remix of Kevin Knapp’s “Dancing with the Devil” out on Crosstown Rebels. 

They will be joined by Kenneth Dixon Jr. aka Moodymann. Although he refuses to be interviewed, he is an outspoken voice, reminding the world the true origins of house and techno. For years, Moodymann only released on 12” vinyl showcasing his use of classic soul and jazz samples, low-lying bass lines and drum programming that doesn’t follow a traditional tempo that tends to push faster and faster.

Lastly, we have Octave One. The duo is composed of Detroit born and bred producers Lenny and Lawrence Burden. The two are known for their electrifying live sets that provide funk, house and symphonic beats. The 430 West Records bosses are most recognized for their release of “Blackwater,” which was featured on over 30 compilation albums worldwide and received support from Louie Vega, Danny Teneglia, Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Kevin Saunderson, and Laurent Garnier among others. Their quality releases have led them to headline the most renowned festivals and nightclubs alongside the biggest names in the industry.

Detroit Love isn’t just any party, it’s an experience.

Carl Craig:

Carl Craig is described as a creative visionary, an electronic music icon, an esteemed Grammy-nominated composer, a world-class DJ and an ambassador for his native Detroit. Yet the common thread that runs through Craig’s broad musical canon and creative projects is a resounding fascination with futurism. The prolific producer has cultivated a unique path as an artist, entrepreneur and civic leader, guided by his tendency toward forward thinking. 

“My livelihood is making music that I can perform, whether I’m doing orchestral production or modular strangeness or generating club music. I don’t restrict myself,” said Craig. “I defined myself by being who I am. The ultimate self respect is when you say you’re going to do something and you go and do it to the best of your ability.”

DJ Minx:

DJ Minx was inspired to spin at The Music Institute in 1989, where some of Detroit’s leading dance music DJs helped to hone her skills.

For two years she engineered and hosted “Deep Space Radio,” an electronic music show on Detroit’s WGPR radio station. She also voluntarily hosted a weekly radio program at the University of Canada on CJAM 91.5 FM called “Steamy Windows,” and later became a resident of world-renowned Club Motor in Hamtramck. In 2000 she was a featured performer at the first Detroit Electronic Music Festival, and has since become a regular fixture at Movement.

In December 1996 Minx founded Women on Wax, a collective of female DJs from the Metro Detroit area. From then on, she worked with promoters and DJs across the country to solidify the career of several top female DJs and singers.

Moodymann:

An outspoken voice in the normally non-confrontational world of electronic dance music, Moodymann (Kenny Dixon Jr.) is committed to keeping a distinctly black imprint on techno and house.

Moodymann worked at several Detroit record stores in the mid-nineties including a store owned by producer Blake Baxter. During the mid-nineties Kenny was also the resident DJ at the Detroit based Outcast Motorcycle Club. At that time he was known as "House". After his first several releases on Planet E Records Kenny became quite popular in France and from there his popularity grew.

Moodymann sound is a hybrid form of techno/house dance music arrived at via innovative use of reworked riffs, samples and grooves. While he may frustrate people with his refusal to be interviewed and insistence on reminding people of the genre's origins, the soulfulness of his output is unquestioned. Utilizing classic soul and jazz samples, low-slung bass lines and an approach to drum programming that is diametrically opposed to the tendency to push the tempo faster and faster, he has achieved classic status thanks to gems like "Sunday Morning", "Shades of Jae", and his remix of Innerzone Orchestra's "People Make the World Go Round". Following years of 12" only releases, he compiled his best work on "Silentintroduction", one of the most celebrated albums of the late 90s. 

 

Octave One:

Octave One featuring Random Noise Generation is the brainchild of Detroit's Burden Brothers. The core unit of the band is made up of Lenny and Lawrence Burden with revolving members of Lynell, Lorne, and Lance Burden.

Octave One has been essential to DJ playlists for over two decades. The prolific band of five brothers has produced classic dance floor anthems that continue to resonate as fresh, groundbreaking tracks. In 2015, Octave One will release their monumental seventh full-length album Burn it Down on 430 West Records.
